Why stop with the vernacular? English speaking Orthodox Christians could benefit with better music to go with the Engish texts of our services. I read something long ago from a Russian Orthodox liturgist who wrote that there is a great need for Western composers to step up to put our English words into better fitting music. He even suggested American liturgies set to Black Gospel or Bluegrass music. As much as I love Byzantine chant, English chanted in the Byzantine style is very strange sounding to the point of distraction. Better to leave it in Greek. While some Westernized Russian music may be more suitable, it would be wonderful if we had some Western compositions (ct. Thomas Tallis) to match liturgies in English.

In my Parish, 98% of the Liturgy is in English. I speak Russian, but even a bit of Slavonic makes me cringe because we're not in Russia. Greek and Arabic sometimes make an appearance. I'm glad Fr Josiah talks about this.

My parish does the liturgy in both greek and English and I love it. I would love to learn greek since many things are lost in translation to English

I honestly don’t understand how anybody can be atheist. If I wasn’t a Christian, I would at least be agnostic. And it’s because of how many times I should have died and got lucky and for some reason the big dude upstairs wanted to keep me on this earth. Countless overdoses (I’m clean now) and a car crash that the tow truck driver and police said I should have been dead since I wasn’t wearing a seat belt kind of prove it to me. Besides the other weird stuff that has happened to me like asking complete strangers if a person I don’t even know is alright and them confiding in me. When I literally had no idea who the stranger or the person of the relation was. God works through us and helps us all the time whether you want God to do so or not. There is just too many unexplainable things that I’ve seen or experienced and I know that other people have to be going through the same thing right? I honestly want to know if other people experience that kind of thing. Because I would hate to be the only one.

Dear father Josiah, evlogeite. Your views on the language are definitely Orthodox. However, a historical issue. The prayers of the martyrs and the saints of the early Roman era (Old Rome-idolatry) for a Kingdom of God on earth (along with the Heavenly Kingdom) were answered by The Holy Trinity and the ONLY Christian Empire ever, the Roman Empire of the Constantinople (New Rome) was founded by Saint Constantine the Great (324-1453 AD). Of course certain heresies from time to time shook the Church and the Christian State. But the Church of Christ continues to this day and till the end of this world. Essential part of the ONLY Christian Empire ever , together with the Christian faith and the sacred centre (i.e. Constantinople) is the Greek language. That's why the Greek language is so celebrated and we must not ignore it. The above tradition of the Kingdom of God on earth is preserved till today on the Holy Mount Athos. God bless.

May I ask, what monastic community in America is pushing this idea that Greek is superior? Fr Josiah never said in the video. Is he referring to the monasteries of the Greek Archdiocese? I have noticed, after visiting an Ephraimite monastery, that the monastics there spoke little English. Services were all in Greek.

In the past, the Catholic Church was responsible for burning Bibles and killing and torturing Christians for having printed copies of it. Catholicism is just another flavor of the Whore of Babylon, who will again, drink the blood of Christians in the last days. In Christ, there is no organized religion because it’s organized by the Holy Spirit, Himself. All my friends tell me I need to listen to Father Josiah Trenham. After listening to three of his short videos, on art, on the filioque, and this one, I now understand why they keep urging me to improve and enhance my Orthodox studies. OK I am convinced.
